Unit 8: DINOSAUR

We learned “Big and small, God made them all."
The letter is Dd

Ryder has learned 39 sight words so far!

These were our books this week.
 PHONICS
Ryder had several phonics and handwriting worksheets this week.

 MATH
Ryder finished up Lesson 100 in Abeka Math K.

SCIENCE/BIBLE
MFW included a wonderful book in the deluxe package called What Really Happened to the Dinosaurs? by John Morris and Ken Ham.  It is a Christian book, explaining that the dinosaurs were created when all the rest of the animals were on day 6 of creation (in the Bible).  Did you know that a dinosaur is actually mentioned in the Bible?  Read Job 40. We talked about how some people believe that dinosaurs were on the ark, but just not adult-sized. A baby dinosaur would be much smaller and would need much less food to eat.
Ryder loved putting together this dinosaur puzzle that I found in the $1 aisle at Target!

He put together dinosaur bones to make the dinosaur. He is going "ROAR!" in this picture!
 He loved this activity!
This week we studied about dinosaurs. We learned about 4 specific types of dinosaurs. He loves coloring, so he colored the dinosaurs!

Mercer enjoyed Play-doh and coloring this week!

MUSIC
This week the song was Bizet: Carmen Suite no. 2 ("Habanera"). Ryder thought it would be really fun to act like dinosaurs during this song!

Unit 7: US

We learned “God made us wonderful!"
The letter is Uu

Ryder has learned 35 sight words so far!

These were our books this week.

PHONICS
Ryder had several phonics and handwriting worksheets this week. He also completed through Lesson 9 of All About Reading. He read 4 short stories this week! So proud of my little reader!

MATH
Ryder finished through Lesson 93 of Abeka K Math this week.

SCIENCE/BIBLE
This week we learned that God made each and every person wonderful. We read in Genesis about God making man and forming woman from Adam's rib. We also studied Psalm 139 about God forming you in your mother's womb. We also talked about angels and God's rules/law being sweeter than honey. This tied into our taste lesson and it came from Psalm 19.

We studied the "senses" this week.

We learned about Touch.

Ryder had to close his eyes and feel different objects in a paper bag and try to guess what they were.
Then he had to do it with a thick sock on. It made it much harder!
We also talked about tickling. If you tickle someone else they will laugh! You can't tickle yourself though!

We also learned about Hearing.
I filled 5 glasses with different amounts of water. They tapped each glass with a spoon and listened to each sound. They discovered each glass made a different sound!

Next we learned about Smell.
Ryder smelled pepper, vanilla, cinnamon, and garlic.

Sight was really fun! I had Ryder draw a person with his eyes closed. He was very frustrated and said it was hard!
Then he got to draw with his eyes open! He said this was easier.
We also studied taste. We didn't have any taste testings though because Ryder is a picky eater.
He made a Five Senses Book to finished out our weekly study on our senses.

MUSIC
This week our classical music study was Bach: Violin Concerto no. 1 in A Minor (I. Allegro). We did this activity on the day we studied hearing. I played the song and they danced around the room. I would pause the music every once in a while and they had to be paying attention and freeze while the music was not playing! They absolutely love our music lessons!

I found this neat idea on Pinterest and decided to make it for Mercer! He is still young for this activity, but he still enjoyed playing with the letters in his name and trying to spell it.

Unit 6: TURTLE

We learned “I don't quit; I persevere."
The letter is Tt

We took a break from learning new sight words this week and just reviewed the ones we have learned up until this point. Mercer is also really starting to catch on to the words of the Pledge of Allegiance.

These were our books this week. We loved the read-alouds about perseverance.

PHONICS
Ryder had several phonics and handwriting sheets this week.

This week Ryder started the blending ladder. It was a review of what he has already learned going through All About Reading Level 1, but it was pretty much a spelling type worksheet which was something fun to do!

Ryder did Lesson 6 this week of All About Reading. This was a tough week, so we only did one lesson, but today he was so proud that he was able to successfully read all the words, phrases, and sentences on his practice sheet!

MATH
Ryder finished up Lesson 84 this week of Abeka Math K. He is flying through his Math workbooks.
 SCIENCE
This week we studied all about turtles. This is the tree map that Ryder completed all about turtles. I helped him spell the words, but he thought of all the descriptions to put on the blanks!
The boys loved pretending to be turtles!

Here they are hiding in their shell because they are afraid!
They also enjoyed "acting" like different animals. Here they are flying like a bird!
Mercer was being a great kangaroo!
 BIBLE
This week our Bible lesson was on perseverance. The theme verse was Galatians 6:9 ~ not becoming tired of doing good. We talked about how sometimes we are given important things to do that might take a long time to finish, but we must obey and not give up!

MUSIC
The song was Strauss: Tritsch-Tratsch Polka. The boys learned that a polka dance is a popular couple's dance in many countries, so they had to dance around the room together!

Mercer played with cars pretty much all week during school time.
This is our new addition this week! Our caterpillar! Each one has a picture of the theme and the saying that is to be remembered each week. We will keep adding to it until we finished all 26 themes this year! He will be quite long :)
