Unit 12: GOAT

We learned “Jesus died for my sins."
The letter is Gg
These were our books this week.
Look how much the caterpillar has grown!
  MATH
Ryder finished through Lesson 131 in Abeka Math K.
 PHONICS
Ryder had several phonics and handwriting worksheets this week. He completed Lesson 17 in All About Reading Level 1. Also, he read 12 BOB books!

Both boys illustrated the month we are on (November) after we read the book "The Year at Maple Hill Farm."

SCIENCE/BIBLE
This week we learned about sacrificing goats in the Old Testament in the Bible, and how Jesus took the place of goats.

Ryder played a matching game with baby/adult animals. He also played a rhyming game with the adult animal cards.

The boys used these puppets to sing "Old MacDonald Had a Farm!"
 MUSIC
This week the boys listened to Bach: Brandenburg Concerto no. 3 in G (III. Allegro). The boys drew lines and shapes while listening to the music.

Unit 11: INSECT

We learned “I am a wise child, so I work hard."
The letter is Ii

These were our books this week.

  PHONICS
Ryder had several phonics and handwriting worksheets this week. He completed Lesson 15 in All About Reading Level 1.

  MATH
Ryder finished through Lesson 114 in Abeka Math K.

MUSIC
This week the boys listened to Rimsky-Korsakov: Flight of the Bumblebee. The boys pretended to be bees flying around the room.

SCIENCE/BIBLE
This week we studied "working hard." We read scriptures in Colossians, Psalms, Proverbs, and 2 Thessalonians.

Ryder made an ant out of playdoh and pipe cleaners. We learned about the 3 body parts of insects (head, thorax, and abdomen). And that ants have 6 legs!
We studied ladybugs and Ryder made thumb print ladybugs! Interesting fact: Ladybugs are known as an "insect predator" and eats harmful insects that destroy plants.
We studied bees. Ryder drew hexagons to make a honeycomb. He also drew a queen bee! Interesting fact: Bees make wax in their bodies and use this wax to make their home, the honeycomb. A honeycomb is used to store honey and to hold the eggs and larvae.
Of course the boys had the try some honey! Ryder did not like it... Mercer asked for more!
The main science project of the week was this ant hill! It was amazing watching the ants work together to build tunnels over several days.

Ryder has learned 46 sight words so far!

These were our books this week.
 PHONICS
Ryder had several phonics and handwriting worksheets this week. He completed Lesson 12 in All About Reading Level 1.

 MATH
Ryder finished through Lesson 104 in Abeka Math K.

MUSIC
This week the boys listened to Handel: Water Music (Lentement)

SCIENCE/BIBLE
The Bible lessons this week were about the Israelites in the desert and the woman at the well. We did several Science projects this week!
The main theme this week was Solids/Liquids/Gases.
We poured water into different shapes of containers to see that water has no shape; it molds to whatever container it is in. We also tried it with a penny, and we discovered that a penny does NOT change shape when you pour it into a different container. We put the blue cup of water above in the freezer overnight and checked it the next day.
It had turned into ice! Ryder learned that when water freezes, it becomes ice and is no longer a liquid but a solid.
We put one ice cub in the refrigerator ...
and one on the window sill to see which one would melt the fastest.
The one in the window sill melted because it was in the sun!
We measured a cup of water and poured it into a sauce pan.
I heated the water on the stove. Ryder learned that when water becomes very hot it becomes steam, which is a gas.
We left boiling for a few minutes and then measured the amount of water that was left. It was about 1/4 cup.
Throughout the week Ryder drew several pictures each day of solids, liquids, and gases!
We did an evaporation experiment. We filled two glass jars half full of water, marked the water level, covered one jar tightly, and left them both in a warm, sunny window.
3 days later we tested the water level. The water in the uncovered jar evaporated faster!
We played a guessing game! Ryder had to guess how far the glass would be filled with 100 drops of water!
We explored how salt mixes with water (picture on the left), but oil rises to the surface (picture on the right).  You can’t get oil to mix with water no matter how hard you try.

Little man enjoyed cars and coloring this week!
