Unit 9: OCTOPUS

We learned “Even the octopus praises the Lord."
The letter is Oo

Ryder has learned 42 sight words so far!

These were our books this week.

PHONICS
Ryder had several phonics and handwriting worksheets this week. He completed Lesson 10 and 11 in All About Reading Level 1.

 MATH
Ryder completed through Lesson 109 in Akeka Math K this week. The focus was on fractions (one-half) and money (dimes, nickels, and pennies).

 MUSIC
The classical music selection this week was Handel: Water Music (Overture). This was perfect because we were studying about a sea creature. Ryder learned that musicians first played this while sitting on a barge in the river! He used crayons to draw fish and then used blue watercolor to paint over the sheet of paper for water.

 BIBLE/SCIENCE/ACTIVITIES
This unit has been my favorite so far! There were a lot of fun, hands on activities which Ryder really enjoys.
For Bible on Day 1 of this unit the boys made tambourines to praise the Lord! And we sang the hymn "Praise Him." We read through several verses in Psalm throughout the week that talked about praising the Lord.

We used a globe and a map to learn about the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.
We marked where we live with a dot; then Ryder colored the water blue and land green.
We talked about how octopus live in the ocean.

While studying about an octopus, Ryder learned they have 8 arms. For lunch the boys enjoyed eating octopus hotdogs!
Since an octopus has 8 arms, Ryder had to think of 8 things that we can praise God for. This was his list that he thought of all on his own!
He enjoyed doing this octopus ink activity! He learned that when an octopus is being followed by a dangerous sea creature, the octopus has a special trick! It squirts dark ink to cloud the water. Then it can safely swim away. I filled a clear glass with water to represent the ocean.
Then I added drops of black watercolor paint to see how the octopus' black ink helps to hide it!
Mercer-man did lots of coloring this week! I gave him some reinforcers since they are shaped like the letter O to use as stickers. He thought that was fun!
