WEEK 7

BIBLE
We continued our Matthew study this week and read some of Chapter 4. We read about William and Catherine Booth in Hero Tales and Ryder copied the character traits about boldness and discipline. We also learned about Greenland in our book "Window on the World."
 
LANGUAGE ARTS
Ryder did Spelling Lesson 7 and got a 100 on his spelling test.
They both did handwriting.
Ryder did lesson 4 this week in English.
Mercer did Lesson 14 and 15 in All About Reading Level 1.
Ryder had reading time every day. He finished The Magic Tree House Book #8: "Midnight on the Moon" and started Flat Stanley's Worldwide Adventures: "The Intrepid Canadian Expedition."
We read some in our read aloud book "Bash and the Pirate Pigs.

GEOGRAPHY
This week we continued our Canada country study! We read facts about Canada, tried to build an igloo (we really needed sugar cubes!), did a crossword puzzle, and started learning the terriories and provinces of Canada. The geography-themed vocabulary word that Ryder learned about this week was continental divide.





MATH
The boys did lessons 26-29. Ryder got a 72/73 on test #3.


SCIENCE
This week we did an overview lesson on plant life and animal life - how they reproduce, how the get food, etc. So we did this experiment with celery. I removed the xylem (which carries the water up to the leaves) on the right celery stalk. We watched for 48 hours to see which one wilted the fastest... the one with the xylem still intact or the one without...

 MUSIC
The boys listened to "Going Over the Sea" on the WeeSing CD. We also listened to a geography song to help learn the provinces of Canada.

WEEK 6

BIBLE
We continued our Matthew study this week and read the end of Chapter 3 and some of Chapter 4. We read about William and Catherine Booth in Hero Tales and Ryder copied the character trait about creativity. We also learned about Garifuna in our book "Window on the World."
 
LANGUAGE ARTS
Ryder did Spelling Lesson 6 and got a 100 on his spelling test.
They both did handwriting.
Ryder started a new English program called Essentials in Writing. It is a DVD-based program and he likes it a lot! He watches a lesson on the computer and then does a corresponding worksheet. He did lesson 1-3 this week.
Mercer did Lesson 12 and 13 in All About Reading Level 1.
Ryder had reading time every day. He finished The Magic Tree House Book #7: "Sunset of the Sabertooth" and started The Magic Tree House Book #8: "Midnight on the Moon."
We also started a new read aloud book "Bash and the Pirate Pigs."
 
 
 
 GEOGRAPHY
This week we started a new country study... Canada! We read facts about Canada, Ryder labels the provinces on a map, both boys learned about the flag and colored a flag. We talked about dog-sledding and the hotel made of ice (Hotel de Glace).  We read about a little boy who lives in Canada in the book "Children Around the World." The geography-themed vocabulary words that Ryder learned about this week are bay and cape.


 
MATH
The boys did lessons 23-25.

SCIENCE
This week we talked about decomposers and scavengers and the food chain!
 
ART
The boys made soap carvings in co-op this week!
 
MUSIC
The boys listened to "Going Over the Sea" on the WeeSing CD. We also listened to a geography song to help learn the provinces of Canada.
 
Co-Op



This week the kids took a plane ride to Canada! When they got off the plane they had their passports stamped and they exchanged USA currency for Canadian currency. They then used their money to buy fruit which they ate as a snack! They learned a few French words that they had to use to communicate with such as: bonjour, merci, wee, and no! They did soap carvings for art, sang along to the WeeSing songs, and made flip books about the food chain!

WEEK 5

BIBLE
This week Ryder wrote out Matthew 4:4 as part of his dictation assignment this week. We continued our Matthew study this week and read Chapter 3.
 
LANGUAGE ARTS
Ryder did Spelling Lesson 5 and got a 100 on his spelling test.
They both did handwriting.
Ryder did Lessons 17-20 in English. He studied about quotations, apostrophes, and contractions.
Mercer did Lesson 11 in All About Reading Level 1.
Ryder had reading time every day. He finished The Magic Tree House Book #5: "Night of the Ninjas" and The Magic Tree House Book #6: "Afternoon on the Amazon."
We also finished our read aloud book "Bash and the Chocolate Milk Cows."
 
GEOGRAPHY
This week we continued our study of the USA. It was a light work week with geography so we just read some different read aloud books that went along with the USA, learning more facts and more about kids that live in the USA.
 
MATH
The boys did lessons 18-22. Ryder got a 76/79 on Test #2.


SCIENCE
We did Lesson 1 in Apologia Swimming Creatures which was about Aquatic Animals.  We also read information about things that live in the canopy and floor layers of the forest. The boys drew illustrations for the different layers. (Ryder's on the left, Mercer's on the right.)

 
Co-Op
This week they went on a nature hike, made flip books for art, learning more about the United States, and listened to some WeeSing songs!



We took a week off of school at home to move, but the kids still went to their co-op class. Here's a picture of Ryder doing his speech on a city he has visited in Tennessee.
